Our nation has experienced a technological advantage in a global environment for many decades, while the US has many talented scientists, engineers and mathematicians, our country still lacks behind other industrialized countries in developing and retaining our newest generations in these disciplines. To help address this, a US National Program the STEM Education Coalition was formed to focus on strengthening these fields of study K-12 to graduate, and including continuing education, vocational and informal education.
In support of this national program, Women In Defense (WID) Michigan kicked off its S.T.E.M initiative in 2010; engaging with local schools, encouraging and inspiring young women to pursue careers involving the S.T.E.M fields. In addition, WID-MI established a specific S.T.E.M board position for 2011 to bring dedicated focus to the S.T.E.M program.
The WID Michigan STEM program would like to thank Sonya Sepahban and General Dynamics Land Systems for its donation of $10,000 to this initiative.
